How Does Invisalign Address Gaps between Teeth?

Gaps are a type of spacing issue. The unwanted spaces can be of particular concern when they appear between the two front teeth. This type of prominent gap is known as a diastema.

Individuals who have teeth that are proportionately small compared to the size of their upper and lower jaw are more likely to have gaps. While certain habits can contribute to gaps, the cosmetic problem is often the result of genetics.

Invisalign is an ideal solution to eliminate the presence of gaps between the teeth. Invisalign works by gently moving teeth through micromovements. Just like traditional metal braces, the orthodontic treatment realigns teeth into their ideal position.

Invisalign can address teeth that are crowded, crooked, and gapped. The treatment can even address some degrees of overbite and underbite. Many of our patients seek Invisalign to address gaps between their teeth.

Some patients benefit from Invisalign’s ability to guide teeth outward toward the front of the jaws. This can address crowding. Individuals with gaps often have the opposite problem. For these candidates, the aligner trays can guide teeth slightly inward to fill in the spaces.

Dr. Dowell will establish your candidacy through a consultation and exam at our dental practice. Candidates should be in good oral health. The vast majority of individuals who come to our office seeking to address gaps in their teeth are good candidates for this discreet and effective treatment option.

In cases of severe misalignment or jaw alignment issues, traditional metal braces may be a better option. No matter what the case may be, we encourage everyone to seek the expert advice of Dr. Dowell.

How Does Invisalign Compare to Alternative Treatments for Gaps?

Invisalign has many advantages to alternative cosmetic treatments.

Porcelain veneers can also close gaps between teeth. The thin shells can be fabricated to cover the spaces. Veneers require removal of natural tooth structure, meaning that the treatment is irreversible. Unlike Invisalign, maintaining the results requires periodically replacing the porcelain shells.

Cosmetic bonding (composite resin) can also address minor gaps between teeth. This option is relatively affordable, but the results may only last a few years.

Invisalign has the advantage of being non-invasive. No significant changes will be made to the structure of your teeth. The results will last a lifetime. Once your treatment is complete, patients simply need to wear a retainer at night.
