Endodontics comes from the Greek endo (inside) and odons (tooth). So, endodontics is literally the study of the internal structures of the tooth. The inside of the tooth contains nerves, tissues, and fibers, and is often referred to as the “pulp.” The pulp fills the inner canals and extends into the jawbone. A large cavity or injury can cause an infection, filling the canals with bacteria. Root canal therapy is the process of cleaning out the canals and restoring the tooth.
