Until recently, removable prosthetics, such as dentures and partials and fixed bridges were the only options to replace missing teeth. Removable prosthetics don’t address the problem of bone loss, which contributes to additional tooth loss and creates a “shrunken” or “sagging” facial appearance. Fixed bridges are a great option for many patients, but they require healthy, neighboring teeth to be crowned. Dental implants are the only completely self-reliant option that prevents bone loss and restores teeth to optimal form and function.
Dental implants consist of two parts:
The implant post. Made of biocompatible titanium, the implant post is inserted into the jawbone where it functions like a natural tooth root. In a process known as osseointegration, the bone tissue fuses to the implant post, creating a secure, permanent foundation for a natural-looking tooth. If you’re missing more than one tooth, implant dentist Dr. Dowell can strategically place a few implants to anchor a specially-modified bridge, partial, or denture.
The implant restoration. The tooth portion that shows when you smile is known as the implant restoration. After a healing period, Dr. Dowell attaches your permanent restoration to the implant post. An implant restoration can be a crown, bridge, partial, or denture.
As your implant dentist, Dr. Dowell often performs all phases of treatment without sending you to outside offices for care. He’s experienced with several kinds of implant dentistry, including traditional dental implants, mini dental implants, and implant-retained dentures. After examining your bone tissue, medical history, and oral health status, he’ll counsel you on the best solution for long-term oral health and comfort.
